5 Places to Visit near Hobart City
The capital city of Tasmania, Hobart, is Australia’s most southerly city, situated in a beautiful setting snuggled against the foot of Mount Wellington.
Being located in such a beautiful place, Hobart is a must-visit destination in Australia. Home to one of Australia’s best food and drink scenes and rich history, there is so much to do in and near the Tasmanian capital.
Here are 5 of the best things to do and places to visit near Hobart, without having to go too far.
Cascade Brewery
Coal River Farm
Salamanca Place
MONA
Royal Botanical Gardens Tasmania
Salamanca Place & Salamanca Market
Salamanca Place is the heart of Hobart and is a fantastic spot for food, culture and history. Cafes, bars, boutiques and theatres line the cobblestone streets of Sullivan’s Cove on the city’s waterfront.
Once the commercial hub of Hobart, the historic buildings of Salamanca Place are now one of the most popular places to visit in the city.
Each time I arrive in Hobart, I have my first coffee in Salamanca Place. I stop, breathe, and just take it all in. The air, the sky, the buildings. I begin to relax. My Hobart stay has begun.
Although there is a lot of history in Salamanca Place, one of the drawing cards to the area is the Salamanca Markets. These markets are considered the best in Hobart and one of the best in Australia!
Situated in a picturesque setting, the Salamanca Markets are open every Saturday from 8:30 am to 3 pm (except for Christmas Day and ANZAC day), offering a wide range of products.
With over 300 stalls in the market, this is a place in Hobart you want to take your time wandering through. Grab some delicious food and browse clothing, artwork and even local souvenirs. This is definitely one of the best places to visit in Hobart.
Museum of Old and New Art
While it’s only been open for ten years, the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is already one of Hobart’s most popular attractions. The museum showcases a private collection of modern art and antiquities. The story of its origin is amazing too.
One of the most unique things about this museum is that it’s underground. As the name of the museum suggests, the works of art range from old Egyptian sarcophaguses to a modern machine that turns food into goo, so you can expect a lot of variety! Some installations you will love, others you may not. Either way, you will certainly have something to talk and think about.
The museum also has a restaurant, library and cinema. I suggest that you take your time and enjoy all the angles and aspects of MONA
Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens
Another one of the best (and free) places to visit in Hobart is the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens.
Set on a hill with glimpses of the Derwent River, the Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens has been around since 1818, making it one of the oldest in the world.
The Royal Tasmanian Botanical Gardens is home to a range of conifers, cool temperate trees, and extensive gardens that embrace the Southern Hemisphere flora.
Some must-see attractions include the Japanese gardens, Tasmanian fernery and the subantarctic plant house.
With beautiful plants spreading 14 hectares, the gardens are a must-see in Hobart.
Cascades Brewery
If you’re a big fan of beer or want to step inside a place in Australia’s history, then Cascades Brewery is one of the best places to visit in Hobart.
Having been open since 1824, Cascades Brewery is the oldest operating brewery in Australia. The Cascade Pale Ale brewed by the company is also Australia’s longest-continuously brewed beer.
There are plenty of things to do at the brewery, such as joining a tour, enjoying a beer tasting, trying some ciders or even having lunch in the heritage Woodstock Gardens.
Coal River Farm
Finally, one of the best places to visit in Hobart on your next trip is Coal River Farm.
Located 20 minutes from Hobart town centre, Coal River Farm allows you to watch local cheese being made and chocolate being blended. You can also pick your own seasonal berries or indulge in the local farm produce at the restaurant. If you have seen their boutique stores in Melbourne and Perth, this is your chance to see and taste the original and best that The Farm has to offer.
Tastings are free, so if you’re a cheese and chocolate lover, this place has to be on your list!
The capital city of Tasmania is such an underrated place compared to the likes of Sydney or Melbourne. However, Hobart has its own special charm worth experiencing.
With so much history, culture and liveliness, there are so many things to do and see in Hobart that are worth booking a trip for.
From beautiful botanic gardens to markets with a rich history, which of these places will you visit first on your next trip to Hobart?
